HOW GEARS WORK
Gears relate the engine speed to the speed of the propeller shaft by driving one toothed wheel against another. The low gear shown has a wheel with 12 teeth driving one with 27 teeth, so the large one is 2.25 times slower. The large middle gear wheel is 1.8 times slower than the small one. The high gear wheels turn at the same speed.
Most drivers have experienced the frightening moment when the wheels lock and the Honda car slides uncontrollably towards the vehicle in front. Although drivers are taught to leave a sufficient gap for braking, and to take extra Honda care on wet or icy roads, the huge number of rear-end collisions every year is ample evidence they do not.
